The challenge

High-resolution, fast full-body skin imaging is essential for the early detection and monitoring of skin cancer and other dermatologic conditions. Scanners for this purpose typically rely on numerous expensive, mechanically moved cameras. In contrast, dermatoscopes – their compact counterparts for detailed local exams – often lack compact optics capable of precise, aberration-free focusing, which is necessary for reliable diagnosis at several hundred pixels per millimeter in just a few seconds.

Our solution

The combination of the EL-16-40 tunable lens and MR-15-30 2D mirror provides everything full-body scanners need – a large field of view and high resolution. With millisecond-speed operation of both elements and a reduced number of cameras, this duo enables a simplified architecture, lower system cost, and improved patient comfort. On the other hand, the ELM series, with focal lengths as small as 8 mm and response times under 20 ms, is an excellent candidate for high-resolution, low-aberration compact dermatoscopes.

Front Lens Configuration

Liquid lenses can also be mounted directly in front of standard lenses, offering a compact solution. With S-mount lenses, horizontal fields of view up to 56° are possible, while C-mount systems typically work best with fields of view up to 30°. In both cases, the liquid lens can often be integrated using existing mounts, keeping the overall system design simple and compact.
