The challenge

In-vitro fertilization (IVF) incubators need to address challenging regulatory requirements to have a successful transfer to patient. A time-lapse imaging of the embryo requires a good image quality and a three-dimensional imaging to capture the embryo’s details. Traditional solutions using motors, while changing focus, generate a movement that can induce a vibration of the sample impacting its image quality.

Our solution

The liquid lenses of the family EL-7-20 and EL-12-30 can be embedded in the microscope of the IVF incubator to enable the focus at different planes along vertical stage of the embryo dish without any mechanical movement, thus preventing any vibration from impacting the image quality. The focus speed of less than 10 milliseconds enhances the time-lapsed imaging. A large number of slices can be imaged with high image quality. The liquid lens can be mounted in different location: inside the objective lens, behind it or in the tube lens. The compact size enables the flexible embodiment of the liquid lens while saving space.

Front Lens Configuration

Liquid lenses can also be mounted directly in front of standard lenses, offering a compact solution. With S-mount lenses, horizontal fields of view up to 56° are possible, while C-mount systems typically work best with fields of view up to 30°. In both cases, the liquid lens can often be integrated using existing mounts, keeping the overall system design simple and compact.
